Summer means adventure—road trips, boating, family RV journeys, and weekend getaways. Before you hit the highway, take a few minutes to review your insurance so every trip is protected from surprise setbacks. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or gearing up for your first summer adventure, here’s what to know—and do—so you can enjoy the best of the season with peace of mind.
Roadside Assistance
No one wants to be stuck with car trouble on a summer road trip. While many new cars offer manufacturer roadside assistance, these plans may expire after a few years or have coverage limitations. Be sure to check what you already have before purchasing anything new. Also check your insurance policy to see what it covers. Some insurers offer coverage with towing, rental car reimbursement or other services.
If your vehicle is disabled on the road, towing expenses can add up quickly. Verify your policy’s towing limits—some cover a set mileage, others a dollar amount per tow.
If you’re renting a car for your trip, check if your personal auto policy extends coverage to rental vehicles.
RVs and Recreational Vehicles
Most recreational vehicles require specific insurance so make sure you review what yours covers before you hit the road. Check for some of the same options as we mentioned with your auto insurance. Roadside assistance can be even more important for larger vehicles.
If renting or borrowing an RV, confirm first with your insurance agent whether your current policy provides any coverage—or if standalone RV insurance is needed. Key coverages include liability, personal property in the vehicle, vacation liability, and roadside assistance for both the RV and vehicle towing.
Rental companies often offer insurance, but be mindful of exclusions and differences between state lines or long-term rentals.
Boats, Summer Toys
With more time on the water, it’s crucial to ensure your boat insurance is active and accurate. Coverage can vary by waterway, distance from shore, and whether you trailer your boat. Verify your policy includes both on-water and transport coverage, and ask about add-ons for gear or fishing equipment.
Likewise, if your summer plans involve motorcycles, jet skis, or other recreational toys, make sure policy details—including usage limits and covered drivers—are still current for your family’s activities.
What to Ask Your Agent Before You Go
-
Does my policy include full roadside assistance for all vehicles (cars, RVs, trailers)?
-
What are my towing and rental car coverage limits?
-
Does my insurance cover me if I rent an RV, boat, or car this summer?
-
Is my policy up to date for all recreational vehicles and drivers in my household?
-
Are there any gaps in coverage based on my summer travel plans?
Before departing, call your agent to clarify scenarios and make adjustments for maximum peace of mind. A quick review with your independent insurance agent can clarify your protection and prevent summer misadventures.
